Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
