The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
