As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
