Within his recently unveiled memoir, titled Ithaki, the ex- premier Tsipras spares no criticism while he examines the chaotic era during Greece's economic turmoil.
A Controversial Choice
According to Tsipras's account, Tsipras chose the unorthodox academic Varoufakis as his treasury head primarily due to his global profile and his very persuasive skills when it came to public orator.
“In reality, he was, truthfully, more like a celebrity rather than an economist,” wrote the 51-year-old.
Clashing Agendas
Tsipras claims that Varoufakis possessed his own agenda that included advancing Varoufakis's books as well as testing out his theories on Greece instead of truly fighting for the country's financial survival.
He explained how those talks to prevent bankruptcy became “not just a way to secure improved terms for Greece. They were a test, an historic opportunity to prove the truth of his economic theories.”
High-Stakes Talks
Amid tense discussions, Greece came dangerously on the brink of leaving the eurozone.
On the line was both the country's destiny and those punishing austerity policies required in return for bailout funds by foreign lenders.
Unsuccessful Options
Efforts to find funds elsewhere, such as a desperate plea to Russia to purchase Greek government bonds, went unanswered.
Helping Greece would be tantamount to tossing cash in the trash-can, Putin is reputed to have told his Greek counterpart during their meeting.
Public Vote Followed by Reversal
That summer, those harsh conditions were subjected to a popular referendum, a move that threw the EU into a deeper crisis of identity.
Even though the vote was won resoundingly by those against austerity, the prime minister was forced to ignore the result and negotiate a rescue deal from creditors which turned out to be tougher.
Final Straw
The ex-PM revealed that he started questioning Varoufakis relatively soon.
“He was the public image of negotiation, the figure who drew media attention, who appeared on the front pages of publications globally … it seemed he was enjoying the spotlight.”
After Varoufakis outlined a contingency plan involving creating a parallel currency as well as issuing vouchers to retirees, Tsipras knew it was the end and asked him: “Is this for real?”
Enduring Rebuke
Within the book, the author concludes how his former ally demonstrated himself “unfit for an agreement demanding complex and delicate handling.”
Tsipras also claimed how his aggressive style made him increasingly isolated with colleagues, put Greece at risk, and helped hawks that were pushing for Grexit.
The account of history has provoked anger along with stunned disbelief among certain groups, whereas the former minister has maintained a conspicuous quiet regarding these claims.
