The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
